The Experience [28 Apr]

Artist Profile & Event of The Month

Artist:

For the 4th episode we feature The Jazz guru, Mr. Funk, Electronic music master, Herbert Jeffrey “Herbie” Hancock. Born 12 April 1940 in “Chi town” (that’s Chicago for the old hippies) Illinois, USA.
The composer, pianist, band leader started his music career early in his life where he was educated in classical music from the age of 7. Throughout his teens he continued his passion for jazz where he was self teaching himself the arrangements of playing the music and its core artistry.
He later started working with Donald Byrd and Coleman Hawkins while he was studying at Roosevelt University (he graduated Grinnell College in degrees in Electrical Engineering and music which he later was awarded with an honorary Doctor of fine arts). His 1st solo album came in 1962 titled Taking Of under Blue Note Records.
His music career took a hike when he joined The Miles Davis Quintet in 1963. From that moment he went on to be recognized as one of the best recording artist in the music industry through his perfected albums throughout his career where he also introduced the Electronic sound into Jazz.  And that also was showcased when he won various Grammy Awards one which was album of the year in 2008 for his album River: The Joni Letters (2nd album to win such award as a jazz album).

Event:

April saw excitement going through Sosha (Soshanguve Township) as 2 of its sons together known as Black Motion went on to win an award for Best Dance album for their album Fortune Teller at the (21st) XXI Annual South African Music Awards.
Black Motion is made of Robert “Dj Murda” Mahosana and Thabo “Smol” Mabongwane who plays the percussions in the group. The 2 have been producing music separately before they formed up in 2010 to producing a string of good dance floor fillers which saw them getting recognized throughout Africa and some Europe countries.
The duo are signed under one of SA’s leading record label Kalawa Jazmee under the leadership of Oscar “Oscido” Mdlongwa who worked with them on their chat topping single “ Banane Mavoko” which saw them getting the recognition national radio stations.
This shows the hard work the 2 put in their project Fortune Teller as they were recently nominated for the Metro Fm Awards for the same album. As Sosha natives ourselves we feel proud of the group to have representing our hood in such high standard. We as Modern Soul Experience love to honor the representative our township.
