The Experience [12 May]
Artist/Dj Profile & Event of The Month
Dj
If there had to be music ambassadors representing their hood, Pretoria (especially Soshanguve) will have this turntable magician first on its candidates list. He goes by the name of Corry Da Groove, a.k.a Mafestere/ Scova/ Moruti/ Korobela too many to mention he himself has nodded that he has forgotten some. Born 07 May 1975 in the cap city of Mzansi.
He says he grew up listening to house music (which in his early days they used to call it “international music” since most of that kind of music was been released abroad). Was introduced to the music by his late mentor Joshua Kgoebane who was like a brother to him and some of Attredgeville’s house music pioneers Pat 4, Dizzi Kampala and Corry (whom he inherited his stage name from).
His Dj’ing career started back in 1985 at his uncle’s pub Spotong in Mamelodi A5 (Pretoria), the legendary Vinny Da Vinci being the Dj he admired. It was back in 1994 that he started his vinyl collection the first which was Dance Masters vol.3.
When asked how many vinyls does he has in his collection, he simply replied “too many I just lost count”. This led him to play at then some of PTA’s prominent clubs such as Ship Ahoy (Central City Mabopane), Cherry’s nite club (Nafcoc center Sosha), Gemini (Klipgat), Seun’s place (Lesapong block K Sosha), Puncho (Mabopane).
House music is his favorite genre that he listens to it even when his chilling, and that’s the reason Robert Owens is his all-time favorite artist, with Ten City’s My Piece of Heaven his favorite track of all-time. Legendary Djs Vinny Da Vinci, Christos and Positive K are 3 of his favorite disc jockies.
It’s difficult to imagine Da G (one of his other alias) being an Accountant (what he says he could have been if the music bug didn’t catch him) cos he is definitely a highly talented Dj and a crowds’ favorite. We wish him more dance floor filling years in his Dj career.

Jam City Radio is the new #1 station based in Pretoria, South Africa which is aimed at the urban 18 to 34 year-olds who have a high interest in music, news, and events. On first impressions, there’s no question that Jam City Radio is a station programmed by music lovers. Just listening a half-hour of music is enough to get exposed to a surprisingly wide range of real house and hip hop artists. The Jam City Radio music policy is an ace up the sleeve which launched in a blaze on Saturday May 31st 2014.
Whether it’s SA, USA, European and Asian A-listers or up-and-comers, Jam City Radio doesn’t seem to discriminate and places them side-by-side. Even for a supposedly well-informed critic like myself (yeah, right), there’s much to learn. What is also key to Jam City’s strategy is Mpho Mothibe’s presence. He’s not merely the C.E.O and Founder of the station; he’s the familiar face that’s very much front-and-center. Throughout the day, he frequently and enthusiastically peddles the pitch to the audience of millenials. “Jam City Radio is here to empower them,” he shouts, but the question is, do millennials go to Online Radio for empowerment?
Well, it is evident that anyone under the age of 34 is hotwired into the Internet. Why listen to traditional radio that doesn’t push the envelope of real music all day to get info on the artists you like when you find everything you want online? Prior to the 1 year anniversary May 31st, 2015, Mpho Mothibe is inviting young creators of this generation to be a part of Jam City Radio. “I want somebody who is the culture. Whether you want to be an on-air personality, a producer, a cameraman, in copy writing, a reporter, the graphic artist, the musical artist … if you’ve got soul, if you’ve got something to say, I want you. You’re not applying for a job. This is a movement. The difference between a “job” and a “movement” is that you get paid to do a job.”
