Artist Profile & Events of The Month
Artist
When the
genre Neo-Soul is being discussed, you can’t exclude to mention the name
MAXWELL on the topic. Born Gerald Maxwell Rivera on May 23 1973 in Brooklyn New York to a Haitian mother and a Puerto Rican father.
His music
career started at the age of 17 just as he was singing at church as it become an integral part of his life after the
death of his father in a plane crash. He began to teach
himself various instruments which were influenced by early 1980’s R&B acts
like Patrice Rushen, S.O.S Band, Rose Royce. It was in 1991 when he had access
to a recording studio that he did his demo. That paved the way for him to
perform at various small clubs throughout New York.
Between 1994 and 1995 he
recorded his debut album “Maxwell Urban Hang Suite”, which was released later
in 1996 due to issues with the recording label’s doubts about the commercial
potential of the album. It included hit songs like “Sumthin Sumthin” and the
ever popular “Ascension- Don’t you ever wonder” and was nominated for a Grammy
Award.
He has released 4 more
albums [MTV Unplugged ’97, Embrya ’98, Now ’01, and his latest
BlackSummer’sNight. HE has definitely put the Neo-Soul as one of the leading
music genres.
Events
11 May 1981
it was witnessed the death of one of the legendary and iconic musician who has
graced the face of the earth. Robert Nesta “Bob” Marley was a Jamaican music
artist who has left the greatest legacy on promoting political awareness
through his music.
It was in
the 60’s that Marley and his group The Wailers started releasing some of their
recorded materials on their debut album “The Wailing Wailers”, that led to
other studio recordings such as “Soul Rebels, Soul Revolution, Exodus,
Uprising” to name a few.
He was a
member of the Rastafarian Movement which its culture had a key element in the
Reggae music. Soccer was a sport he had great love for, some say he could have
made a great soccer player if he took a turn at it. He played it almost
everywhere he could juggle his skills.
Marley was
found to have a type of malignant melanoma under the nail of a toe (a symptom
of cancer). This did not stop him from continuing to record and perform in his
world tour. His illness worsened until he passed away in May 11 1981 at Cedars
of Lebanon Hospital in Miami (now University of Miami Hospital). He was buried
at a chapel near his birthplace in May 21 1981. He was survived by his wife
Alpharita Constantia “Rita” Anderson and his children (due to uncertainty of
how many they are we can’t publish such information). But amongst those known
that had followed in his footsteps in music are Ziggy and Damian “Gong” Marley.
Rest in
power Jah Rastafarian.
