Artist Profile & Event Of The Month
Artist
Artist
He is
considered as a South African resident ever his move in 2012 from Germany to
Mzansi shores residing in the city of gold Joburg (or as many say
Johustleburg). No stranger to most dance clubs and parties both as a Dj and his
productions being played on the dance floors. In this episode we proudly
present Ralf Gum, born 05 May 1971.
His Dj
career started way back in 1990 just before he broke out as a full time
producer. That paved the way for him to perform in some of the world’s leading
dance cities and countries making him to tour continents like Europe, Asia,
South and North America and of course his now residing continent Africa (and he
has surely settled in comfortably). He held residency at various clubs in
Germany at places like “Airport” in Wuerzburg in the early 90s, considered as
one of the deepest clubs where he show cased his skills on the turntables with
guests like Frankie Filiciano, Dj Gregory, Martin Solveig.
Ralf started
producing music in 1993 to date working with some of the industries
heavyweights like Robert Owens, Monique Bingham, Omar and the legendary Hugh
Masekela to name a few. His productions (Remixing and his own) can be heard on
some of the world’s top dance record labels such as Vega Records, Papa,
Peppermint Jam, and Defected that cementing his pedigree as a top dance
producer. In 2001 he established his own record label GOGO music. This proved
to be a great platform for emerging artists to showcase their work to a
worldwide market and so it did for artists like Black Coffee, Raw Artistic Soul
to breakthrough.
He has
numerous albums fully produced by himself, firstly “Uniting Music” released in
2008, “Never leaves You” released in 2012, and his 2014 “In My City” album.
Much as to be expected from this German machine as he continue to release some
of the best dance music.
Profile: Record Label
As huge fans
of SOUL music, we decided to pay a great dedication to one of our favourite
SOULful record label, Naked Music Recordings.
It’s the
brain child of founders Dave Boonshoft and Jay Denes a.k.a Blue 6 founded in
1998. It started as a production company in 1992 as the due were constantly
finding success in releasing music underground with indie record labels such as
OM records, Francois Kevorkian’s Wave imprint, and UK’s XL Records. This was
followed by remixes for high profiled artist such as Sade, Maxwell, and Kelis
to name a few.
After the
success of the remixes the duo saw the need to formulating their own record
label that will release their unique kind of style as they mention “it quickly became
apparent that true creative freedom could only be achieved by starting our own
record label and following our own muse”. And their mission: “to release
forward-thinking that defies easy categorization”.
The label
started by releasing compilations depending on their artists and various
singles they bought from independent artists. The success led to them signing
new artists like Blue Six, Lisa Shaw, Aya, Gaelle, and Miguel Migs amongst
other artists. They mentioned that they enjoy being an Independent label or as
they say their Indie freedom.
