The Experience [31 March]

Artist Profile & Event Of the Month [Mar]

In this episode of the Modern Soul Experience we paying homage to one of the legendary pioneers of house music Frankie Knuckles who passed away this month March 31 2014.

Born Francis Nicholls January 18 1955 in the Bronx, New York, USA, Frankie Knuckles (The Godfather of House music as he was effectionally known) was known for playing an important role of popularizing House music in Chicago in the 80’s when the genre was commonly played at underground clubs and sessions.

It was between the 70’s and 80’s that he and fellow Dj Larry Levan (his childhood friend) that they used to play SOUL, disco and RnB at two of New York’s known clubs (then known as discos) The Continental and The Gallery. He later moved to Chicago where he joined a new club called The Warehouse, which was in its 1st face it was attracting more gay guys, but that soon changed as Knuckles honed his skills and style attracting a mass different crowd.
Frankie was well known for his remixes on various artists’ songs that included Diana Ross, Toni Braxton and the late king of pop Michael Jackson. In 1998 he received the first Grammy Award ever given to a remixer On his own production he did classical jams that still sounds fresh and new and one hit that still blow most clubs in S.A “Tears” where he featured Robert Owens.

Rest in power the Godfather of House music and thank you for paving the way for such lovable genre that keeps uniting people through the world.
