Artist Profile and Event of The Month

Artist

If House music is a nation, this legendary music producer, composer and Dj will be the president. When House music is mentioned, there is no doubt that his name stands amongst its greatest in the genre.  Ladies and gentlemen for this episode of MSE we proudly present the “little napoleon” out from The Bronx (New York, USA) born June 12 1965, it’s none other than Louie Vega.
Born Luis Fernando Vega to a Puerto Rican musician family, his father being a jazz saxophonist and his uncle a singer, made the things easier for him to begin spinning records at an early age of 13. This grew him to become a regular spinner in his neighborhood of The Bronx, where he played at block parties and nightclubs (his 1st residence at Devil’s nest). This spread throughout the 80’s where he played in various clubs even outside The Bronx.
By the 1990’s, where he was already engineering and mixing sound, he co-founded one of the greatest dance group to walk the face of the earth, Masters At Work with fellow producer, composer and Dj Kenny “Dope” Gonzalez. The name which was given to them by a friend Todd Terry who used the name in his productions in the 80’s. The duo went on to produce and remix tracks for various artists both inside and outside the world of dance music. This included artist like Madonna, Earth, Wind and Fire, Michael Jackson to name a few.
They went on using various names such as MAW, Nuyorican Soul, KenLou, Sole Fusion, Hardrive. The duo went on to do their solo projects with Louie Vega going on to establish his own record label Vega Records, realizing his Elements Of Life projects which included his Dj/Producer/Singer wife Anané  Vega singing the albums.

Events

Ricard Robles, Enric Palau and Sergi Caballero, who are these fellaz you might be wondering? Well this are the brains and founders behind the Barcelona based Sonar Festival, a three-day electronic and advanced music festival which was established back in June 1994.
Music journalist Robles and musicians and visual artists Palau and Caballero founded what was firstly known as the “Festival of Advanced Music and Multimedia Art” on the 2, 3 and 4 of June ’94 at the Centre de Cultura Contemporania de Barcelona (Sonar by Day) and the Apolo club (Sonar by Night). This was attended by nearly 6000 people and 40 members of the Spanish media. With performances by Laurent Garnier, Sven Vath to name a few.
By 1996 the number of accreditation holders was tripled to over 18000, which was a significant sign of how hugely the festival was growing. And this continued throughout to the new decade, with the inclusion of new age art effects and state of the art sound equipment being unveiled the festival, making it the 1st stop for major brands to unveil its products.
The festival has projected itself as more than just a music festival by introducing sessions where visitors were treated to technology and record fair, lectures, video art projections, and later SonarCinema (which had screenings of short films, documentaries). This saw need of taking the festival throughout the world where it hosted at various cities around world such as Tokyo, Sao Paulo, Cape Town, London (its 1st international foray).
As the festival celebrates its 21st birthday in 2015, it has always stayed relevant and upfront to its mandate and may it continue to grow and educate for more than 21 years to come.
