3RD EYE (by Sharky)

Greetings peeps!!
It's been a minute since the last interaction of 3rd eye, where we take a look into matters that have major talking points in our social activity...But here we are,,back and about to tackle another matter like we play for Amabokoboko ☺...

Alot has occurred since our debut "3rd eye" view,,but none has shook the mzansi land like the SABC Radio introducing the 90% South African music quota!
While such a drastic decision will always raise eyebrows and many aplenty talking points,,fact of the matter is,if you tune in to radio now,,you will hear home brewed music that you would instantly recognize and say it's mzansi made..Though arguments may arise about being an unfair rule and that there is always a gap to accommodate international music as well, which is true,,but now let's be proud that there are musicians locally that we owe this rule to,alot of artists that have bent their back in trying to make south African music be recognized internationally yet locally they were on a limited airplay stance..I could make a proud example of my fellow homeboys, the likes of Black motion,Uhuru, and Dj Maphorisa being one prime example...When you go to neighbouring countries these guys are instantly recognized and known,Dj Maphorisa recently made waves by having a hand in producing a song for the now best selling hip hop artist,'Drake'....What these guys have in common is coming from humble beginnings to stardom..they never had the luxury of best studio equipment but look at them now...
These guys will now bring hope to the young up and coming musicians, producers, performers that regardless of where you start, its how badly you want it that will see you succeed..Well now with the help in hand of the rule that is,,because now its a chance for every music maker to send through their music to the stations, its a chance now for more airplay of artist's music..it's a chance for more sales of albums to sky rocket...
Sure we will miss hearing the international artists..but it's great for our culture..it's great for our artists..it's great for our music industry,it will be great for their families..and most importantly it will be great for our ears...
It's great news for local artists, who stand to profit from a boost in sales of their music.
And for many listeners too, the decision seems to have struck the right note.
And with this said and done many applaud the decision..i mean look, after so many years we even got a chance to listen to our very own Modern soul's  Dj Kanu on the biggest radio station in the country 'Metro fm'...look we already reaping the rewards☺...
With that we say HALA LEH!!
Till the next episode

CHEERS [By The Spinned Up Junkies]

Nothing is more embarrassing than ordering something you have no clue about with confidence, and when asked its origins, contents, and how it is done, the answer you give is a sound of a scratched cd companied with pop of eyes. We don’t want a situation where you are out with your “blesser” and when you are offered the beverage menu you just go for any cocktail that you think sounds like an energy booster for all night love making (trying to impress the “blesser”).

The origins of cocktail is not clear as the Americans claim to be an entirely their invention but some went on to question the statement saying it can’t be, as its roots are British.  And there are different stories on the inventor of cocktail and the word itself. What most reports say in common is that its invention stretches back to 18th century (same period some of the “blessers” where born). As alcohol was prohibited to be drank in certain public areas, it was used as a front to hide the alcohol content from the law enforcements.
A cocktail is a mixture spirits, sugar, water and bitters to create a flavourful drink, whether it is highballs, punches, fizzes or sours. The different kind of categories (as mentioned in the previous sentence) will be dealt with in details in our upcoming articles, for now we hope we have installed some history knowledge about a cocktail that will be usefull in impressing the “blessers” not only with looks.
Until our next article, CHEERS for now!

3RD EYE (by Sharky)

As mzansi was all in about how different peeps were dressed which is what shifts the attention from music at awards events, on my debut I chose to pin point the topic that has been a dominant figure……”Are these awards voting system a true reflection of the art or is the Art somehow compromised?”
As I watched in all social media platforms, debates about who deserved to win and who didn’t I realized that the Metro FM Awards unlike the SAMAS (South African Music Awards) of previous, gives the consumers, listeners the power at the fingertips to choose, vote and make decisions on their favourite artist. At the end of the day the arguments on social media were such a far cry from the artists that now in their trophy cabinet they wake up to the sight of a Metro FM award.
So back to the major debate of the award events, do the winners sometimes deserve the scalps and wins they get?
KEY DEBATES OF THE METRO FM AWARD CEREMONY:
         1         .    EMTEE
         2         .    FIFI COOPER
EMTEE: This lad has taken the SA music by storm over the past few months and changed the concepts of mainstream Hip Hop and took it back to the streets and hoods just like KO did last year. He had a stellar year for a newcomer to the game. He bagged 4 awards on the night and ofcoz there were debates on his accolades he scooped like Hip Hop one. Cassper & AKA as you know dominate this category and this lad caused an upset on the two goons which sparked an outcry from both rivals fans, lol some said Cassper should have won coz he made a platinum selling album, AKA fans then went on to say their idol’s album was musically superior to Emtee’s. But the fact still remains that the young lad’s fans voted and that counts, case closed.
FIFI COOPER: Hmmm this one was interesting to say the least. Whether this argument can be justified, well you be the judge lol. Okay Fifi Cooper, the young Motswako female rapper caused the biggest upset of the night when she beat other females for the Best Female category!!! This young lady beat the likes of double platinum selling artist, Zahara…. Which goes to show that awards ceremony are very complex especially when involving the fans in a voting system. But then there are winners and losers, and debates and disputes! So the debate between quality of music being chosen over the quantity of fans will go on for days. You guys will decide.

CHEERS [by THE SPINNED UP JUNKIES]

There are many misconceptions when coming to drinking beverages, especially alcohol. So as professional bartenders for a professional cocktail and bar services company we’ll be taking this platform to be giving tips on some stuff you might not have being aware of.
For e.g. We take it that most people are  aware by now that cocktails have an exotics, sensual, seductive names to them, if not, I guess the lagers and ciders have been busy growing the belly you now despise. Take names like ‘Sex on the beach” (for a number of people ordering this drink think they’ll wake up in some exotic island having sex with their secret admirer). Or how about “Screaming orgasm” (for most ladies think they’ll eventually reach an orgasm screaming, which they have been faking to their partners for some time). For both of this we wish it could be possible but we only do the magic preparing the drinks.
And the myth that cocktails are meant only for ladies, or (guys who swing in the same direction as they are, if you know what we mean lol). Cocktails do have different taste and characteristics to them. You find some sweet, bitter, harsh, mellow and so forth. But as said in the beginning this is where we’ll be providing you with the know-how of what, which, how and where of beverages (both alcoholic and none).

THE EXPERIENCE [August 2015]

Artist Profile & Event/Article of The Month

Artist Profile

August 29th 1958 saw the birth of one of the well celebrated iconic figures in entertainment. So in this 10th episode (August edition) we pay tribute to none other than “The King of Pop” Michael Joseph Jackson. A phenomenal singer, songwriter, producer, and dancer who was a household entertainer globally.
Born in Gary, Indiana U.S, he was the eighth child of Katherine Esther Scruse (Mother) and Joseph Walter “Joe” Joseph. He had 3 sisters (Rebbie, La Toya & Janet) and 5 brothers (Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon & Randy). It was in the early 60’s that Michael together with his elder brothers (Jermaine, Tito, Marlon & Jackie) debuted as “The Jackson 5” in the professional music scene, later going solo in 1971.
After releasing a number of solo albums ( 4 to be precise) while still with the family band, Michael starred on a musical “The Wiz’ (where he co-starred with Diana Ross), he met legendary producer and then the film’s musical score arranger and went to work on Jackson’s 1979 “Off the wall” album (his 1st solo album that hit the Billboard charts with smashing songs like “Don’t stop til you get enough and Rock with You”, songs which are still being banged all over to date.
From that onward moment he went on to release chat topping albums, the 1982 “Thriller” (recognised as one of the best albums of all time). Then it was followed by “Bad” 1987, “Dangerous” 1991, “History: Past, Present and Future, Book 1” 1995, “Invincible” 2001. He was known for his energetic stage performances, making the “moon walk” the most danced routine within the pop youth culture. His music videos and its choreographed dance moves changed the way music videos were made and the popularity of then formed MTV.

He passed away on June 25 2009 in his bed in his rented mansion 100 North Carolwood Drive, were attempts of resuscitation efforts continued en route to the hospital, after an hour arriving there he was pronounced dead.
So long “The King Of Pop”, thanks for the many memorable experiences.

HISTORY OF CHICAGO HOUSE: PART 1

With house music currently becoming a well-known global genre in the music industry, we decided to look at its origins and the places together with its people that laid the foundation for chaps such as us Modern Soul Experience, to get to enjoy this music we call “House” which gets peeps crazy on the dance floors.
It was back in an old Chicago nightclub “The Warehouse” that most musical fundis say the name was adopted for the genre. This was a place old disco classics, new Eurobeat pop, synthesized beats where mixed as danced-floor fillers by then resident Dj Frankie Knuckles (who we featured in our 1st Episode). The sounds of dance music like classics by Harold Melvin, Billy Paul and the O’Jays were mixed with upfront disco hits like Martin Circus “Disco Circus” and imported European pop music by synthesizers groups like Kraftwerk and Telex, which marked of pioneering dance music scene.
According to the legend himself Knukles, house is a re-invention of dance music of yesterday (which predominantly compromised of disco music). It was young artists at the Warehouse such as Professor Funk, who would stay throughout the night at the club and sing along and free styled to some of Frankie’s records.  That set the creativity on the emergence of house music.....

He is considered as a South African resident ever his move in 2012 from Germany to Mzansi shores residing in the city of gold Joburg (or as many say Johustleburg). No stranger to most dance clubs and parties both as a Dj and his productions being played on the dance floors. In this episode we proudly present Ralf Gum, born 05 May 1971.
His Dj career started way back in 1990 just before he broke out as a full time producer. That paved the way for him to perform in some of the world’s leading dance cities and countries making him to tour continents like Europe, Asia, South and North America and of course his now residing continent Africa (and he has surely settled in comfortably). He held residency at various clubs in Germany at places like “Airport” in Wuerzburg in the early 90s, considered as one of the deepest clubs where he show cased his skills on the turntables with guests like Frankie Filiciano, Dj Gregory, Martin Solveig.
Ralf started producing music in 1993 to date working with some of the industries heavyweights like Robert Owens, Monique Bingham, Omar and the legendary Hugh Masekela to name a few. His productions (Remixing and his own) can be heard on some of the world’s top dance record labels such as Vega Records, Papa, Peppermint Jam, and Defected that cementing his pedigree as a top dance producer. In 2001 he established his own record label GOGO music. This proved to be a great platform for emerging artists to showcase their work to a worldwide market and so it did for artists like Black Coffee, Raw Artistic Soul to breakthrough.
He has numerous albums fully produced by himself, firstly “Uniting Music” released in 2008, “Never leaves You” released in 2012, and his 2014 “In My City” album. Much as to be expected from this German machine as he continue to release some of the best dance music.

Profile: Record Label

As huge fans of SOUL music, we decided to pay a great dedication to one of our favourite SOULful record label, Naked Music Recordings.
It’s the brain child of founders Dave Boonshoft and Jay Denes a.k.a Blue 6 founded in 1998. It started as a production company in 1992 as the due were constantly finding success in releasing music underground with indie record labels such as OM records, Francois Kevorkian’s Wave imprint, and UK’s XL Records. This was followed by remixes for high profiled artist such as Sade, Maxwell, and Kelis to name a few.
After the success of the remixes the duo saw the need to formulating their own record label that will release their unique kind of style as they mention “it quickly became apparent that true creative freedom could only be achieved by starting our own record label and following our own muse”. And their mission: “to release forward-thinking that defies easy categorization”.
The label started by releasing compilations depending on their artists and various singles they bought from independent artists. The success led to them signing new artists like Blue Six, Lisa Shaw, Aya, Gaelle, and Miguel Migs amongst other artists. They mentioned that they enjoy being an Independent label or as they say their Indie freedom.

If there’s one of the most recognized images of a person throughout the world on graffiti walls, posters, t-shirts and other memorabilia items that will be of rapper, actor, poet Tupac Amaru Shakur better known as his stage name 2Pac or Makaveli. Born June 16 1971 in Manhattan, New York City, sources say his birth name was Lesane Parish Crooks.
He lived his early life involved in the Black Panther Party were his mother Afeni Shakur was an active member. After the family moved to Baltimore, he enrolled at the Baltimore School of The Arts studying acting, poetry, jazz and ballet.
It was in the early 90’s that 2Pac’s career took off, firstly in the Hip Hop scene with various demos and mixtapes before he released with the group Digital Underground. This was followed by his debut album 2Pacalypes Now, then in 1993 he released 2nd album Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z. The big screen caught the attention of the talented man as he went on to act on movies like Nothing but trouble (his first film appearance), Juice (his first starring role), Poetic Justice alongside Janet Jackson, Above the Rim, Bullet, Gridlock’d, Gang Related.
Though he was not shy away from controversy, he went on to release some of the best Hip Hop albums under the record label Death Row headed by Suge Knight which had Snoop Dog and Dr. Dre as his stable mates. “Me Against The World” and “All Eyes On Me”, two of the albums that he cemented his place as one the most influential Hip Hop artist of his generation. He formulated the group Thug Life his friends and later on a new group Outlaw Immortalz.

Event Of The Month [ Deejay Kanu's Birthday Edition]

This is a special episode as it’s a dedication to half part of the Modern Soul Experience, the other member of the “PINKY & THE BRAIN” team. 20th June 1984 saw the birth of Thabiso Bogoshi, better known as Dj Kanu, a.k.a Kamazu a.k.a Kanuza a.k.a Kamina Kawena to his close associates.
The stage name was given to him after the Nigerian Soccer legend Ngwanku Kanu (as he shared a slim framed body, haircut & of course the striker’s slow motioned skills in the field of play while growing playing soccer in the dusty streets of Soshanguve). Now he has transferred those skills on the mixing tables and he sure does show flawless talent when he mixes just as he did in front of the goal posts.
His taste in music varies from Funk & Soul (music he describes shaped his childhood days and was a daily routine in his household). The 80’s Disco also played a huge role in him having the love for House music, and that’s evident in his mixes, a blend of various genres (80’s-90’s Funk, Soulful House, and Club classic House, RnB).
It was some of his favourite Radio dance shows (The Sound Survey with Evidence Kemp & Dj Dikgwele on Metro FM, The Vinyl meltdown with DJ Fresh on YFM) that made him pursue his Dj career by recording the shows on cassettes. The radio jingles during mixes would make recordings difficult especially on some of his favourite songs, so it prompted him to collect those songs on vinyl and that was the beginning of his Dj career.
As the saying goes “the more years the wine, the more mature and smooth in taste”, that’s exactly what Dj Kanu has become as nowadays he not only plays House music but old school Funk, RnB, Soul at his resident pub and other gigs, showing his versatility on mixing different genres. We continue to celebrate you “King” Kanu

If House music is a nation, this legendary music producer, composer and Dj will be the president. When House music is mentioned, there is no doubt that his name stands amongst its greatest in the genre.  Ladies and gentlemen for this episode of MSE we proudly present the “little napoleon” out from The Bronx (New York, USA) born June 12 1965, it’s none other than Louie Vega.
Born Luis Fernando Vega to a Puerto Rican musician family, his father being a jazz saxophonist and his uncle a singer, made the things easier for him to begin spinning records at an early age of 13. This grew him to become a regular spinner in his neighborhood of The Bronx, where he played at block parties and nightclubs (his 1st residence at Devil’s nest). This spread throughout the 80’s where he played in various clubs even outside The Bronx.
By the 1990’s, where he was already engineering and mixing sound, he co-founded one of the greatest dance group to walk the face of the earth, Masters At Work with fellow producer, composer and Dj Kenny “Dope” Gonzalez. The name which was given to them by a friend Todd Terry who used the name in his productions in the 80’s. The duo went on to produce and remix tracks for various artists both inside and outside the world of dance music. This included artist like Madonna, Earth, Wind and Fire, Michael Jackson to name a few.
They went on using various names such as MAW, Nuyorican Soul, KenLou, Sole Fusion, Hardrive. The duo went on to do their solo projects with Louie Vega going on to establish his own record label Vega Records, realizing his Elements Of Life projects which included his Dj/Producer/Singer wife Anané  Vega singing the albums.

Ricard Robles, Enric Palau and Sergi Caballero, who are these fellaz you might be wondering? Well this are the brains and founders behind the Barcelona based Sonar Festival, a three-day electronic and advanced music festival which was established back in June 1994.
Music journalist Robles and musicians and visual artists Palau and Caballero founded what was firstly known as the “Festival of Advanced Music and Multimedia Art” on the 2, 3 and 4 of June ’94 at the Centre de Cultura Contemporania de Barcelona (Sonar by Day) and the Apolo club (Sonar by Night). This was attended by nearly 6000 people and 40 members of the Spanish media. With performances by Laurent Garnier, Sven Vath to name a few.
By 1996 the number of accreditation holders was tripled to over 18000, which was a significant sign of how hugely the festival was growing. And this continued throughout to the new decade, with the inclusion of new age art effects and state of the art sound equipment being unveiled the festival, making it the 1st stop for major brands to unveil its products.
The festival has projected itself as more than just a music festival by introducing sessions where visitors were treated to technology and record fair, lectures, video art projections, and later SonarCinema (which had screenings of short films, documentaries). This saw need of taking the festival throughout the world where it hosted at various cities around world such as Tokyo, Sao Paulo, Cape Town, London (its 1st international foray).
As the festival celebrates its 21st birthday in 2015, it has always stayed relevant and upfront to its mandate and may it continue to grow and educate for more than 21 years to come.

When the genre Neo-Soul is being discussed, you can’t exclude to mention the name MAXWELL on the topic. Born Gerald Maxwell Rivera on May 23 1973 in Brooklyn New York to a Haitian mother and a Puerto Rican father.
His music career started at the age of 17 just as he was singing at church as it  become an integral part of his life after the death of his father in a plane crash. He began to teach himself various instruments which were influenced by early 1980’s R&B acts like Patrice Rushen, S.O.S Band, Rose Royce. It was in 1991 when he had access to a recording studio that he did his demo. That paved the way for him to perform at various small clubs throughout New York.
Between 1994 and 1995 he recorded his debut album “Maxwell Urban Hang Suite”, which was released later in 1996 due to issues with the recording label’s doubts about the commercial potential of the album. It included hit songs like “Sumthin Sumthin” and the ever popular “Ascension- Don’t you ever wonder” and was nominated for a Grammy Award.
He has released 4 more albums [MTV Unplugged ’97, Embrya ’98, Now ’01, and his latest BlackSummer’sNight. HE has definitely put the Neo-Soul as one of the leading music genres.

Events

11 May 1981 it was witnessed the death of one of the legendary and iconic musician who has graced the face of the earth. Robert Nesta “Bob” Marley was a Jamaican music artist who has left the greatest legacy on promoting political awareness through his music.
It was in the 60’s that Marley and his group The Wailers started releasing some of their recorded materials on their debut album “The Wailing Wailers”, that led to other studio recordings such as “Soul Rebels, Soul Revolution, Exodus, Uprising” to name a few.
He was a member of the Rastafarian Movement which its culture had a key element in the Reggae music. Soccer was a sport he had great love for, some say he could have made a great soccer player if he took a turn at it. He played it almost everywhere he could juggle his skills.
Marley was found to have a type of malignant melanoma under the nail of a toe (a symptom of cancer). This did not stop him from continuing to record and perform in his world tour. His illness worsened until he passed away in May 11 1981 at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Miami (now University of Miami Hospital). He was buried at a chapel near his birthplace in May 21 1981. He was survived by his wife Alpharita Constantia “Rita” Anderson and his children (due to uncertainty of how many they are we can’t publish such information). But amongst those known that had followed in his footsteps in music are Ziggy and Damian “Gong” Marley.
Rest in power Jah Rastafarian.
